Causes of Nervous Sweating:  Social Anxiety or Hyperhidrosis?

Nervous sweating may be more than just psychological.  It may stem from a root problem known has hyperhidrosis. This condition simply means that you sweat more excessively than most people.  About 3% of the population have this condition. 

There are 2 main types of hyperhidrosis. The first kind is known as Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis. This type means that you sweat with no known cause or triggers.  It’s just genetic and your body just naturally sweats.

Secondary hyperhidrosis, however, is caused by a trigger.  In this case, the trigger would be a situation that gives you anxiety or makes you nervous.

One way you can determine whether you have primary hyperhidrosis, or just a nervous sweater is by asking yourself, do you sweat like this only when you’re around other people in a social setting or uncomfortable environment? Or do you find yourself sweating more than the average person even when you’re by yourself or not doing anything stressful.  Being nervous can trigger sweating with primary and secondary hyperhidrosis, but if you mainly find yourself sweating only in nervous settings, you probably have secondary.


How to Stop Nervous Sweating

Here are a few ways you can control your anxiety before you enter into a nerve-racking situation:

Breathing Exercises: Take in a deep breath and hold it for 5 seconds, and then release it. Do this several times in a row to slow your heart rate. This will help reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety.

Be Prepared:  The more prepared you are for a situation, the less anxiety you’ll have.  If you’re giving a presentation, practice it until your confidence is boosted.  If you’re naturally nervous around other people, practice being around people to face your fears.  Put yourself in uncomfortable situations with other people when it really doesn’t matter, and it will get a little easier each time.

Stay Hydrated: Your body will actual cause you to sweat more if you don’t have enough water in your body to stay cool. It triggers your body’s sweat glands to cool you down.  So don’t think that by avoiding water that you’ll reduce the amount that comes out of your sweat pores.

Avoid certain food and beverages:  Be careful to avoid certain foods that make you sweat excessively. Spicy foods as well as caffeine and alcohol are stimulates that will increase the amount you sweat anyway, so it’s best to avoid them any time you are planning on being in a nervous setting.


Ways to Hide Nervous Sweating:

You may not always be able to stop sweating completely when you’re in a nervous situation.  Fortunately, there are some things you can do to help hide the water works underneath, and stop sweating through your shirts.
